2014-03-03

It took 3 games and a triple overtime to win the best of three play in games against westside rival Michigan Nationals...

The Summit, Lansing Michigan; the site of this years play-in games for the MAHA States was full of exciting action. Non more exciting than the West Michigan Hounds Vs Michigan Nationals.

Game one:The Hounds defeated the Nationals 5-2 with a goal each by Cam Clarke, Collin Schieman, Devin Farkas, Nathan Viberg and Chase Whallon. Assists by Whallon(2), Corey Siwula(2), Kyle Berry,Alex Bjork and E J Blakeslee with one each.

Game two: The Nationals defeated the Hounds 5-1. Collin Schieman had the Hounds only goal, assisted by Blakeslee.

Game Three: Both teams battled tightly back in forth until Dakota Wilson scored at 12:34 in the first period.
The Second Period was riddled with penalties on both sides. The Nationals tied it up at 10:02 on a goal by Dylan Sampson. Then took the lead on a goal by Brendan VanSweeden at 5:46. The Hounds tied it at two with a  short handed goal by Collin Schieman, assisted by Corey Siwula at 3:43.
In the third period both teams settled into a hard fault battle never giving each other much room on the big olympic size ice surface until Dakota Wilson scored his second of the day with 4:56 to go,assisted by P J Heger and Devin Farkas.
The Nationals didn't quit and managed to tie it up at 2:34 to go. Ending regulation all tied at 3-3.

Overtime saw chances on both sides. Hounds Goaltender Hunter Vorva was stellar in the net keeping the Hounds chances alive. In the second overtime legs were getting tired and shifts were getting short. "Thier ( nationals) transition game was excellent" said Head Coach Mark Lawrence, " They seemed to always have four guys goming at us".
The Third Overtime was more of the same with both teams playing physical and not wanting to make mistakes. It seemed as though it might go to a fourth OT until Coery Siwula brought the puck up the right side wall and upon gaining the zone passed to Collin Schieman in the high slot. Schieman with a nationals defender on him took the only shot he could at 2:34 to go. A backhand over the sholder of the Nationals Goaltender, Josh Turnoch.

Goalie Hunter Vorva stopped 60 shots in the win..

The Hounds move on to the State Tournament for the third staight year. " Three years in a row, and each time we had to go to a third game to get it done" said Assistant Coach Rex Trott, " But this was the longest game I've ever been involved in. It says alot about the Hockey in West Michigan, Both teams should be proud."
